Reader's letter: A black woman's tribute to her grandfather, first slave, then soldier

The Legacy of Edward George My grandfather was born enslaved on a plantation in Jones County, N.C. As a young man, he broke out of bondage. It was the summer of 1863 and the Civil War was drawing to its climax. Edward George decided to fight for his freedom and the freedom of his people.
